Back Pain and Squats at Destin personal Trainer

It’s always a good idea to visit a Doctor when you think something is wrong. Not having the ability to assess your form hands on makes it tough for me to pin point what may be causing your pain but its most likely a combination of stiff muscle, overuse and some fundamental breakdowns in your form while performing squats. You didn’t mention whether or not you’ve always had this pain or it just came on. Regardless, it certainly would seem that squats are the culprit. The best advice I can give you is to try substituting leg presses or step-ups w/dumbbells in place of squats to see how your back responds. In the event you still experience the same type of pain then its definitely time to see your Doctor.

Be VERY careful when performing leg presses NOT to lower the weight too far down. The majority of injuries in the gym are a result of bad form nothing more. Most people believe in order to execute the leg press correctly they must bring their quads (thighs) down to touch their chest. This is incorrect and may lead to serious injury. When people do this they’re actually lifting their butt off the pad and literally rounding out their lower back. The force is no longer on the quads but now on your lower back right where you’re most likely experiencing the pain.As a Destin Personal Trainer, I would recommend starting off by performing leg presses one leg at a time to get a feel for the exercise. This will give your body a chance to adapt to the new movements. Please remember you don’t have to bring the quads down to touch your chest. Everyone’s range of motion is different. Start off with a warm up set and then proceed into your 3 sets of 10-15 reps slow and controlled.
